Walking: The trick to weight loss

The trick to losing weight is walking a lot, according to actress Valerie Bertinelli, who famously lost 40 pounds on the Jenny Craig programme.

Valerie, 49, explained to People magazine that on her recent ten-day holiday to Italy she ate whatever she wanted but burnt off a lot of the calories by walking 85 miles.

“The smallest number of steps we took in a day was 11,000. We never caught a cab,” she told the magazine.

The sitcom actress used a pedometer to record how many steps she was taking but admitted that she is still not properly prepared for the marathon she is set to run on April 19th.

She went on to say that she ran 14-and-a-half miles before her holiday and felt no aches and pains afterwards, so she feels her body will be able to do the full 26 miles after a bit more training.

The NHS recommends walking as a good exercise and it asserts that doing 10,000 steps a day – about 8 km – can help to keep the heart healthy and reduce body fat.

How far do you think you walk each day?

I try to walk at least an hour everyday and on weekends I take the kids out for walks along the beach! I feel better in myself for it

I like to walk when it’s a nice sunny day! I went out for a walk yesterday after work at about half 5, I walked along the beach and before i knew it, it was 7 o’clock!! x

I walk to the metro which takes about 5 mins and then i get off the metro and walk to the bus stop which is a minute walk. And when i get off the bus i have a 10-15 min walk to work, i usually potter about at work so that will count towards my steps. i dont think i do the 10,000 steps but i do walk which makes me feel a whole lot better in myself and keeps my body fit.

I have a full time office job and find it difficult to make time to walk anywhere. But one weekend my boyfriend and I put a pedometer on and made a special effort on the walking front. We went to the park, out for lunch then had a stroll along the beach. By the end of the day we had done about 6,000 steps which is a huge improvement from our average of about 1,000 per day.
