Computers ‘impede weight loss’

Women who are trying to lose weight quickly may find it harder if they regularly spend time in front of a computer, a study has shown.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen studied two groups of women – one that was told to relax for 45 minutes and one that was asked to condense some text into a summary using a computer.

Those in the computer group burnt three more calories than the other group.

However, at a buffet after the task, the computer group consumed an extra 230 calories than the other study participants.

This was because the computer work made the women’s blood sugar levels fluctuate and caused their hunger hormones to increase.

“Working on your computer is sedentary and doing nothing increases your weight. But use of them also increases your appetite as well so there is a double whammy in effect,” the Daily Mail reports study leader Dr Jean-Philippe Chaput as saying.

Back in May, the National Obesity Forum suggested that women can control their weight by taking regular exercise breaks from their computers during the working day.

Does working at a computer make you feel more hungry?

WORKING ON THE COMPUTER FOR ME DEFINATELY MAKES ME FEEL MORE HUNGRY! IN MY OFFICE, I TRY TO TAKE REGULAR WALKS AROUND TO GIVE MYSELF SOME EXERCISE AND A BREAK FROM THE SCREEN

Eating at my desk is a very regular thing for me, I tend not to have a chance to leave my desk so have all my snacks and lunch break here, I snack alot on sweets, crisps, and lots of pop and sweet tea. I really need to cut down on the intake big style.

  7. Joyce says:

During my dinner time, me and my friend Maxine go for a walk with the walking club across the the road from our building through the wagonways. Its a great way to do a little exercise each day – weather permitting though.

I agree with Dina, I work at a computer all day chomping away on sweets, chocolate and lots of sugary teas!! I’m not sure what type of sitting down exercise that can be done in the office without looking like a fool x

  9. Dina says:

I work on a computer and I struggle to lose weight as I find myself sitting on my bum all day long. Plus eating at my desk is one of my worst habits! I don’t know of any exercise I could do whilst at my desk?
