Walking lowers cholesterol, research findsAnyone worried about their cholesterol intake over the festive period might want to start taking a walk at lunch or another convenient time.

This is because researchers at the University of Glasgow and the British Heart Foundation have discovered that not only could the exercise help with slimming, but it may also reduce harmful fats in the blood.

Looking at the effect of physical activity on lipids, it was found that just half an hour a day can change their structure – and the effects last for two days.

Lead author Dr Jason Gill said the fats are like water in a bath, which can be drained out faster with a bigger plughole.

"Exercise works at the 'plughole' end of the process, increasing the body's ability to break down the fats faster. It is important to undertake regular physical activity to maximise the benefits," he explained.

Walking regularly may also help to reduce stress over Christmas, according to specialist massage therapist Steve Finnemore recently.
