Slimmers in Tyneside offered more exercise opportunitiesThose living in South Tyneside and hoping to lose weight have been provided with more opportunities to exercise.

New Easy Line hydraulic resistance gymnasium equipment has been installed in a number of venues in the area, the Shields Gazette reports.

The new facilities will also be used by those put on the exercise referral scheme by their doctors.

Kathryn Thompson, health improvement practitioner at NHS South of Tyne and Wear, which covers South Tyneside Primary Care Trust, explained to the newspaper that exercise has many benefits.

"From the physical, such as weight loss, improved circulation and mobility, to the social, including meeting new people and making new friends," she added.

Ms Thompson went on to say that the equipment is easy to operate and is available for anyone over the age of 16 to use.

Earlier this month, researchers from the University of Montreal revealed that office workers today exercise less than they did in the 1970s.
