Footy fans ‘should maintain healthy eating focus’ during World Cup

People should not forget about the need for them to follow a healthy diet when the World Cup is on, according to one expert.

A Loughborough University professor of sport and exercise nutrition, Ron Maughan, believes that consumers should not lose sight of the benefits of eating fruit while the tournament is on.

He stated: “There is plenty of fresh fruit available as alternative snacks – such as apples and pears – at this time of the year.”

His comments follow the publication of research from the South African fruit industry and Opinion Matters, which suggested that as many as 47 million more takeaways might be consumed by people in the UK during the football tournament.

The World Cup officially kicks off today, with Mexico due to play hosts South Africa before France take on Uruguay later this evening.

Will the Fifa World Cup have an impact on your diet goals?
