Food supplements 'important addition to diet'Food supplements are an important addition to the modern diet, one expert maintains, with many people using such products to lose weight.

Leading nutritionist Dr Marilyn Glenville said that food no longer contains the nutrients it once did, so that even with the best of intentions, well balanced diets can be a “myth”.

Overfarming and the use of pesticides means that the soil food is grown in has become depleted in vital nutrients, and many fruit and vegetables are sat in a warehouse for a while before hitting the shelves.

Furthermore, ready prepared vegetables, such as sliced carrots, also contain fewer nutrients, she explained.

“Supplements are just that, supplementary to your diet and not a substitute for a healthy one. Your goal should always be to eat well. Supplements are like a sort of health insurance, not a replacement for eating properly,” Dr Glenville concluded.
