Diabetes UK: No one diet will help all people lose weightNo one diet can help all diabetes sufferers to lose weight, Diabetes UK has claimed.

According to the charity, different diets work better for different people, so some will lose weight fast on a low-carb diet, but others won't.

Will Williams, nutrition and fitness manager at All About Weight, which supports the work of Diabetes UK, said that low-carbohydrate diets can reduce weight and improve blood glucose control over a short period of time.

However, he said that this tends to only be effective for up to one year.

"There is currently insufficient evidence to support the safety and benefit of low-carbohydrate diets in the longer term," Mr Williams added.

He advised that all people should try to cut down on the amount of refined carbohydrates that they eat and should strive to be more physically active if they want to achieve their weight loss goals.

According to Diabetes UK, some 2.8 million people currently living in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes, but an estimated 850,000 people have the condition but don't know it.

    Tried the Atkins diet a few years ago, (before they had all the foods you could buy). I lost about a stone really quickly and loved the idea that then, you could eat as much protein and fat as you liked. Loved the way my tummy really flattened. Hated the constipation and bad breath!
